Defending human rights in the digital age

The project “Defending human rights in the digital age” is implemented by the Association for Privacy, Technology and Media LENS as a carrier and an NGO Kosovo Center for International Cooperation – QKBN / KCIC as Implementer. The project is funded by the EU and managed by the European Union Office in Kosovo. (January 2016 – August 2017).

The aim of the project is to address violations of human rights, freedoms and democracy that have emerged or worsened in the era of technological development in Kosovo. The project deals with the protection of personal data, privacy rights, freedom of expression and media freedom.

KEY PROJECT ACTIVITIES:
• NON-FORMAL NETWORK AND MEETINGS WITH ORGANIZATIONS OF CIVIL SOCIETY
Establish an informal network of civil society organizations, where topics will be addressed in the field of privacy protection, personal data protection, freedom of expression and other freedoms in the time of technological development.

• INCREASE CIVIL SOCIETY CAPACITIES
Capacity building of organizations and individuals in civil society on how to identify and address human rights violations in the digital age.

• CONFERENCES AT LEVEL COUNTRY
Civil society, representatives of state institutions and the private sector will have the opportunity to engage in discussions and to hear presentations on the subject, paving the way for future cooperation.

• INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
An international conference will be organized in 2017 where participants will hear about the rights of privacy and the need for their protection from well-known international figures with experience in this field.

• RESEARCH
At least four researches will be conducted within the project: a) Legislation in Force and Implementation. b) Private sector access to privacy and personal data protection. c) Security of voter privacy and voter records. d) Impact of digital communication on freedom of expression and media.

• INFORMATION CAMPAIGN
In order to better inform the public, as well as representatives of relevant institutions, an internet-focused campaign started in August 2015 as a key part of project activities. Detailed information on the sectors covered by the project, resources and most important documents are published or accessible on the website www.digitalrightskosovo.com For a more dynamic approach, a site is also open on Facebook as the most social network popular in the world and Kosovo. The open source for Digital Rights Kosovo campaign is already being conveyed by many users of this social network. All news and brief information in video form or info-graphs will be published there. The public will have the opportunity to discuss, comment and directly contact project implementers.
